Alternative to old Voting Procedures
So, where can we look for an alternative? That’s easy. The alternative has been widely used for over 100 years. We have seen it used in our USA Senate and House of Representatives. We have used it when we have participated in a non-profit organization.
The solution is the proven parliamentary process called Robert’s Rules of Order.
Robert’s Rules of Order is America’s foremost guide to parliamentary procedure. It is used by more professional associations, fraternal organizations, and local governments than any other authority.
The New Process
That’s a fancy way of saying the casual process that most of us are familiar with. The process goes something like this.
A proposal is submitted, discussions happen, and amendments are presented. The good amendments, as determined by the group, become a part of the original proposal.
Finally, a vote is taken on the proposal plus the accepted amendments. The result is a solution that is so much more effective and fairer to all concerned than the original proposal would have ever been.

- A motion is raised (a proposal is presented)
- The Chair recognizes the proposal as being reasonable.
- The proposal is seconded.
- Everyone discusses the proposal
- Anyone can propose amendments (changes) to the proposal
- The amendment can be seconded
- More discussion and more proposed amendments
- A final vote is taken on a better version of the original proposal
The process is a natural progression of decision-making. Natural processes that lead to a positive end are never complex.
